UPDATE TWO: Mayor James Mueller released the following statement regarding the overnight fire at Stadium Flats Apartments:

"I thank our South Bend Fire Department and all first responders for their swift response to Stadium Flats and dedicated efforts to keep our community safe this morning.

Stadium Flats is an important investment to expand affordable housing options in South Bend. We will continue to work with our partners to move this project forward and push through today's unfortunate setback."

UPDATE:  SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire just after midnight Tuesday at the Stadium Flats Apartments, which is currently under construction. The department received multiple calls that the entire site was engulfed in flames, along with a crane.  Crews arrived to heavy fire conditions and upgraded the response to a second alarm; nearly every available SBFD unit responded to the scene.

The fire produced a significant number of embers and debris; firefighters prevented it from spreading to the neighboring Diamond View Apartments and the South Bend Cubs Performance Center across the street.

Diamond View Apartments were evacuated because of its proximity to the fire. Several windows on the top floor were damaged by the heat.

SBFD is assisting evacuated residents while officials assess the condition of the crane and determine when residents can safely return to the building.

The fire is under investigation. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available. 

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department is responding to a large fire near Lafayette Boulevard and South Street, and the public is asked to avoid the area at this time.  There's no word on the cause of the fire or if any injuries have been reported.
