UPDATE: Victim identified in deadly shooting at local motel

UPDATE: The Elkhart County Homicide Unit has identified the shooting victim as 35-year-old Allen L. Cogswell, of Elkhart.
According to court records, Cogswell was recently released from prison on probation after being sentenced for multiple charges, including Child Molestation.
On May 28, 2025, he was released on probation.
The shooting, which occurred at 2820 Cassopolis St., remains under investigation.
ORIGINAL: ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating a shooting that left one dead Monday morning.
The Elkhart Police Department said they were dispatched to Daylite Inn on Cassopolis Street just before 1 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting with injuries.
When police arrived, they found an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound inside a room at the Daylite Inn. Officials said that victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the victim's name is being withheld pending family notification.
