St. Joseph County sheriff arrested in OWI crash
KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. - The sheriff for St. Joseph County, Michigan, was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Sunday, according to Michigan State Police.
Sheriff Mark Lillywhite was booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail following the incident.
At 2:18 a.m., Lillywhite was traveling south on U.S. 131 when he allegedly rear-ended a Nissan Rogue traveling in the same direction.
The crash caused both vehicles to lose control and run off the road.
Those involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.
During the investigation, state troopers noted signs of intoxication while speaking with Lillywhite, reports said.
Following a field sobriety test, Lillywhite was taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail for operating while intoxicated and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
He was released Sunday afternoon, per protocol, according to reports.
Witnesses claimed the Chevy did not have any headlights on before the crash.
