INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Special Olympics of Indiana is in need of volunteer coaches to support 19,000 athletes statewide.

As the number of Special Olympic athletes continues to grow, so does the need for coaches.

The organization says it is looking for compassionate and motivated individuals to join their program and who can empower and push athletes with disabilities to pursue their goals and achieve success.

"Coaching for Special Olympics Indiana has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," said 30-year volunteer coach Chris Akers.

"I was inspired by my love for sports and helping children, and after almost three decades, I can honestly say there's nothing better than being a part of these athletes' journeys." said Akers, "I'll never forget one young athlete who struggled to walk over time, we built his strength, and he became one of our fastest runners. Watching that transformation was extraordinary."
