SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend firefighters were called to two different structure fires on July 4 and into the morning of July 5.

"Shortly before midnight companies were dispatched to the 700 block of Johnson Street for a fire," fire officials said. "F103 reported a working fire in a one-story house. Crews found fire on the exterior of the house on the Charlie side extending into the attic. Crews began attacking the fire and opening up the attic space where heavy fire was found. Crews were able to get a handle on the fire and the fire was marked under control around the third ten-minute notification. Primary and secondary searches were negative. No injuries were reported."

Just a few hours later, crews were dispatched to the area of Bertrand and Huey Streets for a fire in a vacant two-story house in the 2200 block of Bertrand Street.

"Due to poor structural integrity from a previous fire (last year) and heavy fire conditions, crews took a defensive strategy," crews said. "No injuries were reported and both fires are currently under investigation."
