Rya Barnes sentenced 64 years in prison for fatal 2024 shooting

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sentencing documents from St. Joseph Superior Court No. 2 reveal Rya Barnes has been sentenced to a combined total of 64 years for the fatal June 20, 2024, shooting of 28-year-old Jasmine Swanson.

Barnes was convicted of Murder, two counts of Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Recklessness, and Criminal Recklessness Committed with a Deadly Weapon in December 2025.

Due to aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the total sentence imposed on Barnes is 80 years with 16 of them suspended on 10 years of reporting probation.
