22-year-old woman charged with murder in Parry Street shooting

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police Department reports a suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting that killed one woman and wounded two others on Parry Street in South Bend Thursday.

South Bend police were called to the 500 block of Parry Street on the report of shots fired Thursday, June 20, around 12:25 a.m.

Officers found a victim, identified as 28-year-old Jasmine Swanson, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Swanson was later pronounced dead.

While authorities were investigating, they were informed two more women with gunshot wounds arrived at the hospital from the same scene.

South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit's investigation led to 22-year-old Rya Barnes being identified as a suspect.

Barnes was arrested Thursday afternoon on multiple preliminary charges and was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

She has been formally charged with:

  • Count I: Murder, a felony
  • Count II: Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 felony
  • Count III: Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 felony
  • Count IV: Criminal Recklessness, a Level 5 felony
  • Count V: Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 felony

Barnes was also charged with the Firearm Enhancement.

The sentencing range for murder is 45 to 65 years, the sentencing range for a level 5 felony carries a sentencing range of one to six years, the sentencing range for a level 6 felony carries a sentencing range of six months to two and a half years, and the sentencing range for a firearm enhancement is five to 20 years.
