Road closures start next week for trail construction in South Bend

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The City of South Bend announced that construction on the trail connecting downtown and Notre Dame is set to begin on Monday, May 20

City officials say the project's aim is to promote safety for all modes of transportation, calm traffic, and improve infrastructure.

Construction will begin on Monday, resulting in Hill Street's closure between Madison Street and the South Bend Avenue intersection.

South Bend Avenue will close from Hill Street to Notre Dame Avenue.

Wednesday, May 22, construction will begin resulting in Notre Dame Avenue's closure between Angela Boulevard and South Bend Avenue.

The detour route for both closures will be Angela Boulevard to Twyckenham Drive to SR 23/Eddy Street to Lasalle Avenue.

Officials say construction is expected to be done on all streets in September, weather permitting.

Work will continue on streetscape elements like streetlights, wayfinding signage, and trees even after streets have reopened.

The trail will start in downtown South Bend in the plaza at the corner of LaSalle Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard.

It will take trail users east on LaSalle Avenue, north on Hill Street, then northeast on South Bend Avenue to connect to Notre Dame Avenue.

The project is funded jointly by the City of South Bend, Hotel-Motel Tax Board via Visit South Bend Mishawaka, and the University of Notre Dame.
