New Carlisle, Ind. -- Major upgrades are on the way for the roads surrounding the rapidly expanding Amazon data center campus in New Carlisle.

The St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission took the next step towards new plans aimed at easing growing traffic congestion brought on by the massive development.

At the center of the latest decision is a diamond-style interchange at State Road 2 and Larrison Boulevard, a project designed to accommodate the spike in traffic around as 32 large scale data centers take the place of cornfields.

Local leaders say today's vote is a key step in preparing New Carlisle’s infrastructure for the fast-paced transformation already underway.

“This interchange and some of the other projects are still in the design phase,” said Bill Schalliol, Executive Director of Economic Development for St. Joseph County. “We don’t have final renderings or plans yet, but we’re moving forward to get the projects bid and built,” Schalliol added.

The vote updates the scope in a contact with Lochmueller Group as the Indiana Department of Transportation takes lead both the design and build of the interchange.

Plans are also in motion to build a new connecting road within the data center campus. The new road would create additional access points and improve overall traffic flow once the interchange is complete.

Construction could break ground as early as the end of 2025, with a target completion date of fall 2027.

However, for some residents in the path of progress, uncertainty remains.

Several homeowners who will be displaced by the project say they are still awaiting formal appraisals and official relocation timelines after assessments were completed last week.
