Ramona skating rink rolling back into business

This comes after a lightning strike caused a devastating fire in May 2024, burning down Ramona, which held the title of the oldest skating rink in Michigan.
After the fire, the owner of the rink, Harold Schaus, said they held several fundraisers to start the rebuild process, and people came from near and far to support them.
“Every fundraiser we’ve had, because we did the car show in, I think it was June, then we had Romona’s 96th birthday party in July and those were really busy, really heavily supported,” said Schaus.
Schaus explained the construction process is happening rather quickly, amid some weather delays. He said given the track they’re on now, they hope to have the building take shape by the end of the month.
Once the facility is up, Schaus said they’re making a change from the past grey walls. Instead, they will be blue with a white roof.
He also explained they were able to save, or replace, some of the old decorations that made the Ramona Roller Rink what it was.
“There was some stuff we were able to replace that we thought was irreplaceable, so it’ll try to… look like it did,” said Schaus.
He went on to say they’re speaking with Skate-A-Rama in Niles to possibly have fundraising nights for construction costs, but those details haven’t been finalized yet. To keep up with rink updates, click here.
