Police identify suspect, officers involved in deadly shooting
ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department has released the names of the officers who were present when a suspect was shot on Lusher Avenue Sunday.
Corporal Bruce Anglemyer, Corporal James Ballard and Sergeant Karl Miller were all present when suspect Jamie I. Benavidez, 27, was shot.
According to the police, they responded to a burglary in progress call at 332 West Hubbard Sunday afternoon.
When police arrived, they chased two individuals seen leaving the house.
One suspect, a 14-year-old, was caught and arrested without incident at 312 West Lusher.
The second suspect, Benavidez, was shot at 328 West Lusher after pointing a gun at officers. All three officers fired their guns at Benavidez.
Indiana State Police detectives are investigating.
The 14-year-old was arrested on a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, pending review by the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office. He was interviewed and released to his father's custody.
