UPDATE: One dead after two semi-trucks crash, catch fire on I-94 Monday

UPDATE: The Benton Charter Township Police Department reports a call came in around 5:43 a.m., Monday, regarding a crash involving two semi-trucks on I-94 near mile-marker 29 in the eastbound lanes.

Officers arrived on scene to find both vehicles on fire.

The report states one of the drivers did die, despite rescue efforts.

The deceased driver had yet to be identified and was taken for an autopsy.

Police say the other driver was uninjured and is cooperating with investigators.

The initial investigation, police say, determined one semi-truck was parked on the shoulder of I-94 when the second truck collided with the first.

Police clarified, despite social media rumors, there were no hazardous materials in either truck.

The report states the Berrien County Hazmat team did assist with the cleanup of diesel and oil on the road from the crash.

ORIGINAL STORY: BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Eastbound sections of I-94 were closed Monday morning due to a crash and a vehicle fire.

At 5:59 a.m. Monday morning, MDOT reported that the eastbound freeway of I-94 around Exit 27 and Niles Road was closed, due to a crash. At 6:19 a.m., MDOT added that I-94's eastbound freeway near Exit 28 and Scottdale Road was closed due to a vehicle fire.

Drivers headed east on I-94 near Exit 28 were detoured off the interstate at Exit 28.

The left lane of westbound I-94 at Exit 29 and Pipestone Road was also blocked as of 7:08 a.m., though all lanes were opened by 7:21 a.m.
