UPDATE: NWS confirms two tornadoes hit Michiana Tuesday morning

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. on July 16, the National Weather Service has officially declared that a second tornado stuck Marshall County southwest of the intersection of 19th and Birch Roads.

NWS officials say the funnel then moved northeast crossing 19th Road before lifting in a grove of trees.

"Additional damage continued northeast to along Apple Road but appeared to be from straight line winds. Damage was confined to several trees being snapped or uprooted in the area."

Maximum wind speeds were estimated at 75 mph with a width of 75 yards, making it a category EF-0 tornado.

The funnel touched down southeast of Hawthorne Elementary School "and proceeded quickly east-southeast, eventually lifting near the intersection of Bismark Avenue and S Main Street."

Multiple trees were uprooted, partially due to the wet ground conditions. There were also several snapped tree limbs and trunks.

The worst of the damage happened on Mather Avenue, between Carlton Avenue and Naomi Street.

"Winds were estimated in the 85 to 90 mph range with a maximum width of 250 yards," NWS officials said.

It has been officially classified as an EF-1 tornado.

The tornado lasted for an estimated two minutes between 12:09 a.m. and 12:11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

There were no injuries reported as the result of either tornado. 

ORIGINAL: ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- According to the National Weather Service, a storm survey on Tuesday confirmed that a brief tornado hit the south side of Elkhart west of U.S. 33, between Lusher and Hively Avenues, where several trees were either snapped or completely uprooted.

"It has been confirmed that a brief tornado occurred in this general area with wind speeds of at least 85 mph, consistent with a high end EF0," NWS officials said.

Weather officials say a line of strong to severe thunderstorms raced across northern Illinois into northern Indiana during the late evening hours of July 15 into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Reports of trees and power lines down have been received in multiple counties with details still being gathered across the area," NWS officials said.

Additional details will be released later today once the survey team returns and the data assessment is completed.

According to Elkhart city officials, as result of this confirmation, Elkhart County Emergency Management is in the process of declaring an emergency for Elkhart County.

Representatives from Elkhart and Elkhart County Emergency Management will hold a press conference with more information and the implications of an emergency declaration at 3 p.m., Tuesday.
