NIPSCO contracts out repairs for pavement irregularities along McKinley Highway, expect lane restrictions

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- NIPSCO has contracted Premium Services to repair several irregularities in the concrete pavement along the south side of McKinley Highway, which resulted from previously performed utility work.

To make the necessary repairs officials say lane restrictions will be in place starting Wednesday.

Both eastbound lanes of McKinley Highway, beginning between around 800 feet east of Russell Industrial Parkway, AM General Military's west entrance, east to Coyle Court will be closed.

During the closure eastbound traffic will be shifted to occupy the existing center "left turn lane."

During this configuration, left turns will be prohibited for eastbound traffic north onto Evergreen Plaza Drive.

Evergreen Plaza Drive and Dogwood Road access will be allowed from the westbound lane only, right turn in and right turn out only.  This pertains to accessing any other property along the northside of McKinley Highway within the limits of the lane restrictions.

Officials anticipate the project to last into mid to late October.

Officials also note the two eastbound lanes will be merged into one and advise motorists to be mindful of Fire Station 13 which is located at the east end of the restricted traffic area.

Traffic will then be exiting the merged conditions opening back into the traditional eastbound lanes.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution coming out of the merger in an area where emergency response vehicle may be entering traffic at this point responding to calls.

Motorists are asked to adjust speeds accordingly to the surrounding conditions and be patient while traveling into, though, and out of the construction zone.
