New senior activity center coming to downtown South Bend in early 2025
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Board of Directors of REAL Services and Portage Township announced a new partnership to bring a senior activity center to downtown South Bend.
Officials say the center will be named before the end of the year and be located at the former Portage Township offices at 133 N. William St.
According to officials, the center will offer active aging programming, recreation, and health and enrichment programs for residents 60 and over.
Officials say the new center is being developed to address concerns around social isolation among older adults and to promote healthy aging through programming aimed at enhancing older adult’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
REAL Services CEO Karla Fales said, “The need for a dedicated center for our seniors in South Bend is clear and supported by local, state, and national data.”
Officials say as part of the rollout, REAL Services is seeking Center Ambassadors to help guide the development and launch in the spring 2025.
“The center will provide a permanent venue for activities, workshops, and programs that can be specifically tailored to the wants and needs of our seniors. We are excited about this partnership and what it will provide in terms of enhancing the quality of life of our residents. It’s a vital investment in our older adult population, ensuring they have a place to connect, thrive, and continue to contribute to our community," said Township Trustee Jason Critchlow.
