Three arrested for drug, firearm charges following traffic stop

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports an officer made a traffic stop on a Buick LeSabre near 5th and Marion Streets around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday after the vehicle allegedly failed to signal a turn.

The report states the officer approached and made contact with the driver, later identified as 56-year-old Tommie Moreno Elkhart, and the two passengers, later identified as 28-year-old Ian Alexander Leer of Elkhart and 36-year-old Parrin Garner of Goshen.

The officer noted the backseat passenger, Garner, wasn't wearing his seatbelt and the vehicle smelled like marijuana.

Another officer arrived to assist removing the three men from the car. As they were being removed, the front seat passenger, Leer, began to flee from police.

Police made chase and took him into custody off 4th Street without further incident.

Authorities say they also located a firearm that Leer allegedly dropped during the foot pursuit.

Officers found a second firearm in the vehicle and seized purported synthetic marijuana. Police then found a third firearm in a bag Garner had been holding.

Leer was arrested and taken to the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number, a Level 5 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A Misdemeanor, and False Informing, a Class B Misdemeanor.

Leer was also arrested and booked on an outstanding warrant.

Garner was arrested and taken to the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of Dealing in a Controlled Substance Analog, a Level 2 Felony, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony.

Moreno was arrested and taken to the Elkhart County Jail on a preliminary charge of Possession of Marijuana-Prior, a Class A Misdemeanor.

These arrests have been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal criminal charges.
