STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- Communities in Northern Illinois, and Northwest Indiana are still cleaning up following the tornadoes that touched down in the area Tuesday night. Damage across Starke County consists of many downed power lines, uprooted trees and damage to properties in the area.
The National Weather Service surveyed the damage across Starke County which they say started north of San Pierre and tore through the rural areas northeast before ending just north of Knox. This tornado has now been declared an EF 2 with a peak of 115 mile per hour winds.
That same storm produced multiple tornadoes before hitting Starke County, including the small community of Wheatfield in Jasper County. The National Weather Service says the community was hit with an EF 1 tornado which damaged at least 20 homes and led to three people with minor injuries.
The sirens and other alerts started about 45 minutes before the tornado hit which gave residents plenty of time to get to safety.
