62-year-old man arrested for Domestic Battery after aiming gun at wife
Elkhart County Jail ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A 62-year-old man was arrested after allegedly getting drunk and pointing a gun at his wife to threaten her.
Vernon Reames is charged with Domestic Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon as a Level 5 Felony, Intimidation as a Level 5 Felony, Domestic Battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old as a Level 6 Felony, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated as a Misdemeanor.
Around 3:28 p.m. Sunday, May 24, an officer responded to a residence in the 19000 block of Thornberry Lane in Bristol after a report that Reames had gotten drunk and pointed a firearm at his wife.
After arriving at the residence, the officer learned from his wife that Reames had allegedly arrived home earlier that day before sitting in his pickup truck for several minutes with his firearm.
According to the wife, she tried to get Reames to give her the gun and locked the door when he would not, leading to Reames shooting the firearm around the house and threatening her with it through the glass door to let him inside.
She allegedly opened the door into Reames, knocking him and his gun down. She then picked up the firearm and set it on a table before calling 911.
Allegedly, Reames got back up and tried to reach for the gun, slapping her twice, but she kicked him away. He then got into his pickup truck and left.
She also noted that her grandchildren were there, both of whom confirmed they heard Reames shooting outside.
While the officer was at the residence, Reames called his wife and the officer noted that his words sounded slurred. The officer spoke to Reames, and he said he was at a boat launch in Elkhart.
Reames was then found and taken into custody. His initial hearing was Tuesday and there are no future court dates at this time.
