Multiple-vehicle crash under investigation by St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- On July 16, a crash occurred at the intersection of Walnut Street and Colfax Street at 6:07 p.m. that involved multiple vehicles.
The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was activated following the crash.
The crash occurred after an attempted traffic stop. A vehicle, driven by Matthew James Dean, a 33-year-old from North Liberty, did not stop after officers attempted to initiate a stop and instead accelerated southbound on Walnut Street.
Dean proceeded to ignore the red light. He then struck a Ford Explorer, driven by a 48-year-old woman of South Bend.
He also struck a Jeep, driven by a 51-year-old man from South Bend, which proceeded to roll over.
The Ford Explorer then hit a Pontiac, driven by a 74-year-old woman from South Bend.
A female passenger in Dean's vehicle was transported to the hospital after being critically injured. All the others involved were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by FACT.
