Multiple crews respond to house fire, officials say there were no working smoke detectors

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety reports they along with the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety, Benton Charter Township Fire Department, Benton Township Police Department, and Medic 1 Ambulance Units responded to a house fire Monday morning at Pearl and May Streets.

Fire crews arrived to find the home still occupied with smoke and fire showing from the rear.

Crews then helped the residents escape the home.

The report states the fire was contained to the outside wall and extension inside the home.

Crews remained on scene for an hour and a half before the fire was out.

Fire officials say the home had no working smoke alarms.

Officials remind the public all area fire departments, through a partnership with MI Prevention provide smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

No injuries were reported in this incident.
