Mayor Mueller temporarily renames two streets in honor of Solidarity Day and Dyngus Day

City of South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Mayor James Mueller and other city leaders gathered at the intersection of West Western and Laurel Street, which became Solidarity Day Drive, and the intersection of Ford Street and South Warren Street, which became Dyngus Day Drive.

Both are celebrated on the day after Easter, with Solidarity Day having a focus on making sure all people have a place and can work toward coming together and finding common ground.

Dyngus Day is a Polish holiday that centers around tradition. This year, there are no elections, but typically it falls in the middle of Indiana's Primary Election.

For South Bend, Dyngus Day typically attracts political candidates from both sides. Mayor Mueller said when there are elections in 2026, it will be a great time for the community to meet candidates up close and personal.

"Dyngus Day celebrations, if you like kielbasa, if you like good food, if you like having fun, there's oftentimes traditional polka music if you if you haven't experienced that. So, this is, this is a celebration. This is a holiday of celebration. And so that's first and foremost, the politics just kind of has become intertwined in it over the years," Mueller said.
