La Porte County Fairgrounds hosts FEMA registration for residents in need of assistance

LAPORTE, Ind – On Friday, La Porte County residents gathered at the Fairgrounds for FEMA’s mobile registration, providing those who are underinsured or with no insurance at all.

La Porte County Commissioner Joe Haney says there are hundreds of residents in the area applying for FEMA assistance both online and in person.

“For folks to be able to come in and talk face-to-face and get their questions answered face-to-face and fill out these forms in person is really helpful,” Haney said. “Especially folks who either have a harder time with technology or on the other side of it are still dealing with outages where some of the storm damages may have affected their computers.”

When it comes to exact numbers that La Porte County will be getting from disaster relief, commissioner Haney has not heard anything yet but has heard that they may be able to receive assistance up to 75%, with the county covering the other 25% of concurred damage costs.

Haney added that in La Porte County’s case, after going through all of the hoops and red tape with the federal government, it could be up to 2 years until they see reimbursements.
