May ArtWalk to feature Ducky Derby, Lerner on the Lawn kick-off

ELKHART, Ind. -- The monthly Elkhart ArtWalk announced its selection of the events and activities to be featured for May’s edition. May’s theme is about giving back to the community.

Created by non-profit Premier Arts, the ArtWalk series highlights the art, events and organizations that contribute to downtown Elkhart by hosting a free showcasing on the last Thursday of each month until October. QR codes will be scattered throughout downtown, encouraging attendees to scan them for information on events and merchants.

May’s ArtWalk kicks off on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. with the 2022 Ducky Derby, a race to see the fastest rubber ducks in the Elkhart River.

At 6 p.m. on the Central Green of Civic Plaza there will be a free live concert from the experimental alt-pop group, Hooked Like Helen. This will be followed by the start of the Lerner on the Lawn series presented by Friends of the Lerner and the Rex & Alice A. Martin Foundation.

A Volunteer Fair for local nonprofits hosted by Acts of Service will be present to inform interested community members how to take part.

“The majority of our nonprofits have critical needs for volunteers and this gives an opportunity to the nonprofits and potential volunteers to connect the dots…There is a wide variety of ways to get involved in the community, regardless of age or ability and I hope the May ArtWalk will shed light on that, all while having a good time,” said Ashley Jordan, director of Acts of Service.

Other events and organizations featured include:

  • Well Crafted Artisan Market at the Civic Plaza
  • Dance lessons and demonstrations from That’s Dancing
  • Student Art Showcase at the Elkhart Public Library from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Kid’s Craft Area is sponsored by the Elkhart Education Foundation. Here children volunteer to create cards for patients at Hubbard Hill and Elkhart General Hospital.
  • Art Depot on Civic Plaza
