March to the Memorial event set to honor the lives of those lost on 9/11
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Tomorrow marks the 23rd anniversary since the devasting terrorist attack by Al Qaeda hijackers which killed more than three thousand Americans.
One Michiana resident is marching to honor those who perished, with the hope of sparking community engagement and building relationships with first responders.
Bob Lyons could see The World Trade Center smoke from his home in New Jersey, an image he says that he will never forget.
"The second tower was hit, after a while, we went upstairs, and you could see it from our rooftop," stated Lyons.
After marching for years in various 9/11 groups, Lyons started his own event five years ago called 'March to the Memorial'.
Tomorrow, Sept. 11 at 9:11 a.m., the march will start in the parking lot at Erskine Plaza.
It will end 21 miles later at the 9/11 memorial at Saint Patrick Park.
The 21-mile march symbolizes a 21-gun salute, which honors the fallen.
Lyons continues, "This whole thing is about bringing the community together, and part of that process is our rest stops, our fire stations, so the community can engage with our first responders and say, thank you for your service."
Their mission, to ensure that all the victims who perished on that day will never be forgotten.
"When you walk with us, you get a sample of how our country was the days after 911 we became a family. People did things that they wouldn't normally do for people that they didn't know," Lyons finishes.
You can sign up for the walk, or all are welcome to show up and show support.
