ORIGINAL STORY: The Elkhart Police Department says a man is in custody after a SWAT standoff that lasted more than three hours this morning.

Officers arrived at the 100 block of Witmer Avenue at about 9 a.m. after the department received a call about a possible domestic situation at a nearby home during the previous hour.

Police made contact with the female victim outside the home and made multiple attempts to call a male suspect in his 50's out of the residence.

During the investigation, officers received information that the suspect was possibly armed.

As a result, they obtained a search warrant for the residence and the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was activated.

SWAT members then deployed cannisters inside the home. The suspect exited the residence and surrendered to the authorities around 12:15 p.m.

The suspect was transported to the hospital due to his exposure to the gas.

After being medically cleared, he was transported to the Elkhart County Jail.

There were no other reported injuries and authorities say this was an isolated incident.

The situation remains an ongoing investigation.
