Man charged with shooting woman who later flagged down Concord school bus
Elkhart County Jail ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A man is officially charged in an incident that led to a woman who was shot flagging down a Concord Community Schools bus.
21-year-old Darnell Ford faces four felony charges, including Burglary where serious bodily injury occurs, Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and two counts of Kidnapping while hijacking a vehicle.
The incident happened April 15. Officers were called to 6th Street and Stiver Avenue in Elkhart after a bus driver reported that a woman boarded her bus and said she was shot. Officers later found gunshot wounds to her leg and arm.
The woman told officers she was shot inside her home on Hastings Street in Elkhart. She identified the shooter as "Coma," and "Dee Dee" as a second masked individual at the scene; law enforcement identified the two of them an Ankoma Kirk Jr. and Darnell Ford respectively.
Shortly afterward, a man approached the scene. He told officers that he and the female were the victims of a home invasion by two masked men. He told officers that at 9:45 a.m. he was sitting in his car outside the home, when the two men approached and pointed a gun to his head. The man said that the men pistol-whipped him and marched him into the home to find the woman. Documents show at least one gunshot was heard inside the home before both victims were forced at gunpoint back into the male victim's vehicle.
The two masked suspects allegedly entered the backseat of the car, while a third unknown individual followed in a black Ford Explorer. The male said he was ordered to drive toward his father's house. He escaped when he fled from the vehicle after it came to a stop at a home on 601 Oakdale Avenue in Elkhart. The two suspects allegedly got out of the car with the woman and attempted to get someone to answer the door at the home. When no one answered, the two allegedly fled in the Explorer. The woman then flagged down the school bus for help.
Officers found blood and multiple bullet holes in the home the suspects allegedly broke into. Security footage appears to show the incidents as described to law enforcement.
The male victim told officers the suspects stole his personalized gold and diamond necklace, valued at about $15,000.
The Explorer involved in the crime was found at a home on Huey Street in South Bend. In the car, officers found gloves that appeared to match those shown in the surveillance video. In the center console, they found a wallet containing Ford's ID card, along with mail addressed to Ford.
On April 20, investigators learned the stolen necklace had been pawned at Gold & Diamonds in South Bend. Surveillance video shows two men approaching the shop to sell the necklace; one of them wore shoes that matched those caught on video at the scene of the crime.
Ford's jury trial is scheduled for September 21.
Kirk has not been arrested or charged.
