Starke County Jail

STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- A Grovertown, Ind. man is behind bars in Starke County Friday morning after he allegedly sexually abused a woman with a severe physical disability last summer.

Forty-four-year-old Chad Demis was first implemented in the crime on June 23, 2024, when a report was made alleging that Demis forcibly touched the victim and forced them to perform oral sex.

The next day, search warrants were obtained for Demis' residence, cell phone records, and DNA.

On June 25, those warrants were executed, and through cell phone records, authorities found a text Demis sent to a friend after the alleged assault.

"It's said that good people make bad decisions. I would never claim to be a good person, but please don't' let one decision, one snapshot in time, destroy everything we have," the message from Demis' phone reads.

All the collected evidence, including a sexual assault kit, bed sheets, and undergarments, were submitted for analysis by Starke County authorities in July of 2024.

On Feb. 25, 2025, the laboratory analysis was completed, and results indicated an insufficient amount of male DNA for further analysis was found on swabs collected, but trace amount of DNA were found on the victim's undergarment.

"The DNA profile is 39 million times more likely if it originated from [the victim] and Chad Demis than if it originated from [the victim] and an unknown, unrelated individual," the report states.
