SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36 in South Bend has announced it will hold its annual tribute and memorial service to fallen officers will be at 7:30 p.m. on May 17 at the South Bend Police Station.

"Police officers throughout our nation serve with pride and professionalism," said FOP 36 Chaplain James Burns. "When a man or woman dies in the line of duty, it is a sensitive and senseless loss. The South Bend Police Department has lost 15 officers, and the St. Joseph County Police Department has lost one officer; but nationally the loss of officers is far greater."

The South Bend Police Station is located at 701 W. Sample Street.

Organizers say that in the event of bad weather, the service will be held indoors in the auditorium of the police station.

"We must never forget the dedication and great sacrifice our law enforcement officers make for the community," Burns said. "Therefore, we cordially invite the South Bend and surrounding communities to attend our annual tribute and memorial service by attending in-person or viewing the Facebook live stream."

Sign language interpreting services will be provided.
