Lake effect snow hits LaPorte County hard Thursday
Lake effect snow slammed LaPorte County early on Thursday.
The weather was to blame for a shocking crash on the westbound Indiana Toll Road 20 miles west of South Bend. Traffic was backed up for miles even hours after the multi-vehicle collision was moved to the side of the highway.
1:05 PM ET: This crash has been cleared for an hour on the Toll Road W but there’s still a 3 mile long slowdown going towards LaPorte. I just hope everyone is ok after seeing the shocking aftermath of this crash @ABC57News @TomCoomes pic.twitter.com/49P0uMnu1f

Areas along Highway 421 were hardest hit. Some parts of Westville picked up nearly 10” of snow overnight. So, it was a shock to Dana Riotte to see absolutely nothing just to her west.

“I got out of the driveway, headed toward the Toll Road and Chesterton,” Riotte said. “Once I got to Chesterton, there was no snow. I had to go to Merrillville and Lake Dale, and there was no snow…no snow at all.”
Olivia Presley waited until later in the day to make the trek on I-94 through Michigan City to Madison, Wisconsin.
“I’m a little bit anxious for it but I’m hoping since I’m going in the middle of the day that it’s not going to be too bad or too much traffic,” Presley explained.
While there were still pockets of snow Thursday evening, most of Michiana will be quiet weather-wise until the start of next week.
