UPDATE: Elkhart bus driver accused of DUI fired, ISP investigation ongoing

UPDATE: Elkhart Community Schools confirmed to ABC57 Wednesday morning that the school bus driver accused of being impaired while on the job in January has been fired.

The driver, identified as Lisa Wig, was terminated for violating multiple policies, according to school officials.

Indiana State Police are still investigating the incident.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police confirmed to ABC57 that an Elkhart Community Schools bus driver is currently under investigation for possibly driving under the influence.

Police couldn't specify whether the drive might have been drinking or on drugs.

ISP's Commercial Motor Vehicle Division received a tip regarding said incident on Jan. 23.

ISP released the following statement about the case:

“Our Commercial Motor Vehicle Division became aware of this incident on January 23, 2026.  Our CVED school bus inspector assigned to this area as well as our Compliance Review Supervisor met with Elkhart Community Schools officials to gather more information on this incident.  The investigation is ongoing.  Once this investigation is complete it will be forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for review.”

Elkhart Community Schools released the following statement regarding the investigation:

"On January 23, between bus routes, a transportation employee was reported by another staff member for suspected impairment. The employee was removed from duty. Elkhart Community Schools has remained in constant communication with investigators from the Indiana State Police and is cooperating fully.

Because this matter may involve criminal review, the district cannot comment on additional details at this time. The employee is on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the legal investigation.

The district is also conducting an internal review of procedures related to this incident. Any concern involving student safety is taken seriously, and we will continue to evaluate our response to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place."
