Indiana Toll Road's Elkhart Plaza to close temporarily for upgrades
ELKHART, Ind. -- Indiana Toll Road Exit 92 in Elkhart will be temporarily closed starting tomorrow for upgrades. It is expected to reopen by May 11.
Chief Operating Officer for Indiana Toll Road Rick Fedder says the closure is due to replacing worn-down pavement and upgrading outdated tolling equipment.
"It's, it's a much easier project to complete if we close the entire plaza down, as opposed to phasing different lanes closed and still allowing traffic in and out of the plaza. It allows the contractor to work safer. It allows the contractor to get the work done in a shorter period of time. It's just a much safer approach," Fedder said.
During the closure, drivers will be rerouted to Exit 96.
The improvements are part of a plan for the Toll Road that has included nearly $1 billion in updates over the past decade.
Fedder is urging drivers to slow down in work zones, pay attention to signage and plan accordingly.
"But long term the plaza will be, from a pavement performance perspective, in a far better place than it is today. It's just us recognizing that the pavement needs to be needs to be cleaned up a little bit, it needs to be rehabilitated just to make that drive a little bit more pleasant for our motorists," Fedder said.
