How to keep yourself and others protected during firework season
SOUTH BEND, Ind -- ABC57's Sidney Moore spoke with Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention, Derek Erquhart ahead of the Fourth of July to go over safety procedures you should follow when lighting and discarding fireworks.
You definitely want to make sure to set fireworks up on a flat surface like concrete to avoid grass catching on fire or fireworks falling on their sides. You also need to make sure to only light one firework at a time, while making sure houses, trees, people, and pets are out of reach. Make sure to check in with your local cities for different laws and ordinances when it comes to firework season.
As for discarding, make sure to soak the firework after it's done in a bucket of water overnight to avoid any reignition that could lead to a potential house fire. You never want to relight a firework after it's finished even if it is a dud.
