How firefighters keep warm in the cold weather

NOW: How firefighters keep warm in the cold weather

MICHIANA -- This winter has been nothing short of brutal, freezing temps, lots of snow, and lots of slide offs and crashes in Michiana.

Firefighters are one of the first responders to many things from crashes to fires; they are always out fighting for the safety of the public, but when temperatures get super cold, they have to take extra steps to ensure safety.

Derek Erquhart, Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention and Fire Marshal for the City Sample say, so our personnel, we encourage them to make sure they have extra gloves, hoods, warm weather or cold weather gear. Always keeping extra clothing in the truck is a good example. Try to have dry clothing, depending on if we are out and about, where they might get wet, they might have something to change into."

They even have to take extra steps for the trucks they drive. Often firefighters wash their vehicles, and during the winter this act must be done inside. Once they finish washing the vehicle, they have to keep the doors open to make sure they dry completely, preventing the doors freezing shut, or the contents inside the compartments not freezing from getting wet.
