Heavy snow possible Wednesday night for parts of Michiana

NOW: Heavy snow possible Wednesday night for parts of Michiana

While February 2025 has featured a few tastes of freezing rain and wintry weather, as of Monday, South Bend still has not recorded measurable snow this month.

That will likely change quickly as a fast-moving, powerful winter storm blasts through Wednesday into Thursday.

Travel could be difficult Wednesday night, as snow could be falling at one inch per hour rates into early Thursday. Total snow accumulations could top six inches, which is significant. Typically, South Bend has one event of more than six inches of snow per winter. We already had one such event back on December 5th.

While Michiana has had a decent amount of snow this winter, the area is still running almost 20 inches below normal for the season. And, most of the snow that we have received has been easily cleared, either with brooms, leaf blowers, or simply by letting the sun melt it away.

This upcoming winter storm, however, will be a different story. Much of the snow could fall within a six-to-eight-hour window, and will at least partially be a thick, heavy snow. As a result, you may actually need to use a snowblower for the first time in years across portions of Michiana.
