Head Coach of Washington High School Girl's Basketball Team Steven Reynolds Jr. resigns after 11 successful years
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A major loss for South Bend Washington high school.
Longtime Girl's Basketball Head Coach Steven Reynolds Jr., stepping down after 11 successful seasons with the Panthers, and one state championship.
Over the last 11 years, Steven Reynolds Jr. has turned South Bend Washington Girl's Basketball team into a powerhouse.
“We wanted them to grow, we want them to grow academically, you know, and on the court as well," stated Reynolds.
Under his leadership the Panters claimed the 2022 Class 3A State Championship, a defining moment for the program.
But for Reynolds, success isn't just about trophies, it's about molding young athletes into leaders.
“He doesn’t just want us to be basketball players, he wants us to grow into young women like basketball builds character and he was really big on that," stated Small Foward for South Bend Washington High Basketball Monique Mitchell.
Seeing what Coach Reynolds has done for the program and his three daughters, who played at Washington, show what is possible when you put in the work.
“I love you dad, and I thank you for everything you have done for me and this program, and I wish you best and everything you want to do in life," stated Daughter and Senior Kira Reynolds.
From the sidelines to the scoreboard, his players describe him as more than just a coach, Reynolds is a mentor, motivator, and a game changer, who will be missed.
“Good Luck with everything I know you're going to do great wherever you land, I love you," stated Assistant Basketball Coach Karis Phillips.
Monique Mitchell continues, "I just want to say thank you to Coach Reynolds for everything. I'm so excited to see what you will be doing next and thank you.”
As for the future of this team, Coach Reynolds says they need the community now more than ever.
"South Bend needs support. We need people in the stands and speaking positivity and encouragement, you know, over these girls, and that's what I would like to see whenever I come back and visit," Reynolds finishes.
Reynolds tells ABC57 that he will reveal his next step before the end of the month.
