GOSHEN, Ind.-- The American Heart Association selected a sixth grader from Goshen Intermediate School to serve as a volunteer local Youth Heart Ambassador for the 2024-2025 school year.

Eleven-year-old Kayleigh Shisler will work closely with the American Heart Association’s in-school programs, Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge, to passionately inspire peers to adopt healthier habits for improved mental and physical well-being.

The American Heart Association accepted nominations nationwide from young people who have been affected by heart disease or stroke.

Shisler was diagnosed with a series of heart defects when she was four months old. Two days later she had emergency surgery to correct one of those defects. She continues to see a cardiologist to monitor her heart and will do so throughout her life.

“I am happy to help others save lives and help others figure out if they have a heart condition like mine,” Shisler said.

The Youth Heart Ambassadors serve a one-year commitment as a volunteer of the American Heart Association assisting the organization to be a relentless force for healthier lives for all.

“Kayleigh has an incredible story to share, and we are excited to see the impact she will make in our local schools and in schools across Indiana” said Stephanie Rosenberg, school engagement director for the American Heart Association.
