SODUS TOWNSHIP, MI. -- The funeral arrangements have been made for the six victims killed in the deadly fire at a Sodus Township motel on July 28th. Kiarre Curtis and five of her children died in a fire that investigators say started accidentally in one of the rooms.
Now, the community and the Curtis family is beginning to grieve.
Stuffed animals, candles, deflated balloons are piled up at the entrance of the motel. They colorful display stands out against a background of police tape and destruction.
The ashes and boarded up walls are a memory of the madness that went on, just over a week ago.
In just a few days, exactly two weeks since the fatal fire, Curtis and five of her children, 10-year-old Marquise; 7-year-old Gerome; 5-year-old Samuel; 4-year-old Savod; and 2-year-old Avery will be laid to rest.
The community is coming together to raise the funds needed for this unexpected funeral: a joint funeral for the six members of a single family.
The GoFundMe page is a tribute to a dedicated and close-knit community. In six days, more than $6,000 has been raised to help the Curtis family with expenses. Their goal is $50,000.
The funeral for the Curtis family will be held on August 11 at 10 a.m. at the Greater Community Christian Fellowship in Benton Harbor.
