NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- It’s the first day of classes for students at University of Notre Dame!

Students are officially moved into Notre Dame after a long summer – some for the very first time.

The university received a total of 26,506 applications for the class of 2026, which is a 12% increase from last year, according to Ivy Coach College Admissions Blog.

Those admitted represent all 50 states, as well as 95 countries.

All freshmen students are required to live on campus for their first year and must be roomed with at least 1 randomly assigned roommate.

There have been a number of events that commemorate the start of the school year -- the Notre Dame Band kicked off the school year last week with a marchout to celebrate being back on campus.

A ‘Welcome Back Bash’ was also thrown yesterday by the university’s Center for Social Concerns.

Upperclassmen have been helping first-year students find their way around campus as they navigate an exciting life change at Notre Dame.

The freshmen seem to be most excited for new friendships, independence and of course, football season!

One freshman, Charlie Mason, says she is most excited “to get involved in different clubs, explore different interests” and go to football games, of course!

We wish all returning and first year students a wonderful first day and a great school year!
