Fighting Irish basketball legend John Shumate dead at 72
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame announced Fighting Irish basketball legend John Shumate died Monday at the age of 72.
Shumate played for the university from 1971-74 and was later inducted into Notre Dame’s Ring of Honor in December 2022.
After playing for the Irish, Shumate was drafted by the Phoenix Suns and later earned NBA All-Rookie Team honors in his first season, Notre Dame officials said.
During his time in the NBA, Shumate also played for the San Antonio Spurs, Buffalo Braves and Detroit Pistons.
Shumate also got into coaching, going on to be a head coach at Grand Canyon from 1983-86, seven years at SMU, from 1988 to 95, and one year with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in 2003.
Notre Dame also hired Shumate for three seasons as an assistant coach from 1981-82, and 1986-88. He also was an assistant coach with the Suns for one year from 2009-10.
Shumate is survived by his wife, Mary Shumate, his children, Brittany (Alix) Shumate Pereira, John Anthony Shumate, Ishmael Hall, his grandchildren, Mia Jade, Margaret, and Eliot, sisters, Barbara Jennings, Yvonne Winona Newman, Patsy Wright, Lorraine Shumate, and Evangeline Walker, his three brother-in-laws, six sister-in-laws, and along with nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
