33rd annual Science Alive comes to the St Joseph County Library
SOUTH BEND, Ind -- Mike Brey stepping away as the Men’s Basketball coach after 23 years.
“He’s been here almost as long as I’ve been alive,”
“They’ve had some good showings and it’s a reason he stuck around for such a long time,” said Notre Dame Student Loren Hahn.
Mike Brey known as the winningest coach for Notre Dame men’s basketball, recently losing to Florida State at home, putting their overall record at 9-10 this season and 1-7 in the ACC conference.
“That’s the boss’s responsibility. Totally accountable. Totally accountable,” said Brey.
At Tuesday night's game, he was emotional after the loss, speaking about his own performance and foreshadowing the news that he's leaving Notre Dame after 23 seasons.
Fans and students I spoke to on campus, reflect on the many years Coach Brey has been instrumental to the Irish experience.
“We were hosting a home volleyball game and he was just stopping by and saw our team getting ready to play and thought he would come over and give some encouraging words to us,” said Notre Dame student Ashley Straub.
“Having him stop by at our tournament was really meaningful because he was like our hype man for a little bit there,” Student Ashley Young added.
“He seems like a staple to Notre Dame athletics and to see him go is really sad,” said Straub.
“It’s an end of an era,” said student Mia Gorman.
