SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The city of South Bend was approved to purchase five acres of land from South Bend Community School Corporation for $277,750 at their school board meeting on Monday, Jan. 22.
The plot of land has sat empty for decades just north of their transportation center on the city’s Northwest Side.
They intend to transform the grassy field into a $12,000,000 “New Day” intake facility for the homeless population, which would be operated by Our Lady of the Road, who currently runs the Motels for Now program.
Their executive director, Shelia McCarthy told ABC57 while their current location at Knight’s Inn has served its purpose, it was always a temporary solution.
The new facility would house 80-100 beds and have purposeful spaces doctors, mental health professionals, and social workers.
The redevelopment commission will make the final vote.
If approved New Day hopes to begin construction in the summer and be operating by next year.
