Elkhart man charged in drunk hit-and-run crash

ELKHART, Ind.-- On Nov. 15 at approximately 7:08 P.M., Dispatch received reports of a vehicle, a green Mercury Mountaineer, leaving the scene of a crash at 60027 C.R. 11 in Elkhart. 

A caller reported that a vehicle stopped on her property and had noticeable damage to the passenger side and a single male occupant, later identified as Jose Hernandez.

Hernandez told the caller that he had been involved in a motor vehicle accident and not to call the police.

Hernandez left the vehicle on the property on foot to "get a friend" and returned with Jose Delgado., the two attempted to get the vehicle to start.

When Ptl. Benjamin VanSickle and Ptl. J. Diaz arrived at approximately 7:18 P.M., they observed Hernandez sitting passenger as Delgado sat in the driver's seat.

Once out of the vehicle, VanSickle noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Hernandez's breath along with bloodshot, glossy eyes and slurred speech.

Hernandez spoke little English, Ptl. Diaz assisted with translation, citing that Hernandez was slurring his speech in Spanish as well.

Hernandez advised the officers that he had been driving East on C.R. 26, heading towards Bristol, to pick up his daughter when an unknown vehicle collided with the passenger side of his green Mercury Mountaineer as they exited their driveway.

Ptl. A. Miller-Coral was requested to assist with the investigation on the scene, where all three officers noticed the floor of Hernandez's car covered in empty "Bud Lite" boxes.

Hernandez has been charged with:

  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person
  • Operating a Vehicle with Alcohol Concentration Equivalent to .15 or More
