Lightning strike causes garage fire in Granger

Clay Fire Territory

GRANGER, Ind. -- Clay Fire Territory were dispatched at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday to a structure fire in the 50800 block of Galaxy Drive.

Crews found smoke throughout the house and immediately shut off the power.

The lightning struck a tree by the roadway, traveled under the driveway, blew two holes in the driveway, then entered the garage and blew out all the electrical systems.

Crews checked the attic for extension to ensure nothing else was affected.

The homeowner, who was home at the time of the fire, called 911 to get emergency crews on the scene quickly and minimize the damage.

The fire was under control at approximately 1:53 p.m. an no injuries were reported.

Fire Marshal Ron Melser stated, “It is a good reminder that for emergency calls, call 911 first instead of contacting the fire station directly. Minutes count in getting emergency services there quickly. After a fire, never turn the power back on if it was damaged by fire or a lightning strike. Wires could be damaged inside the walls that we cannot see. Have a professional check the electrical.”
