Driver dead following early morning crash with semi-truck

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the intersection of U.S. 20 and C.R. 300 E. in Kankakee Township around 4:31 a.m. Thursday for a two-vehicle crash.
The report states a vehicle was engulfed in flames upon arrival and a deputy and bystander attempted to rescue the entrapped driver, later identified as 44-year-old Cary C. Canary of La Porte.
The two were unsuccessful and Canary was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities' initial investigation revealed a 2016 Kia, driven by Canary, was traveling south on C.R. 300 E. when the Kia failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the path of a semi-truck on U.S. 20.
The truck driver, identified as a 39-year-old Freemont, Ind. man, was unable to avoid the Kia and collided with it.
Deputies say toxicology test results are pending, and no further information is available at this time.
