UPDATE: 69-year-old Man dies from accidental drowning while rescuing his dog
UPDATE TWO: The Elkhart County Coroner's Office confirmed the victim, identified as 69-year-old Phillip L. Hoover of Syracuse, died from accidental drowning.
The preliminary investigation determined that sometime on Monday, Hoover fell into a private pond in the 70000 block of C.R. 29 while attempting to rescue his dog who had fallen through the ice first.
The dog was rescued by emergency personnel. The dog was alive and had no apparent signs of injuries.
Authorities say final reports are pending for the coroner’s office and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
UPDATE: The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
ORIGINAL STORY: SYRACUSE, Ind. -- Elkhart County Dispatch confirmed to ABC57 that a call came in for a water rescue in the 70000 block of C.R. 29 around 4:01 p.m., Monday.
The Indiana DNR responded to the scene along with New Paris Police Department, Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office, and the Syracuse Police Department.
The New Paris Fire Department reports a dog fell through the ice.
A person tried to rescue the dog and fell in as well.
The dog is still alive, while the person was taken to the hospital.
The person's condition is currently unknown.
