UPDATE: As of 11 p.m., the Associated Press has called the race for Michigan's Fourth District in favor of incumbent Bill Huizenga.
ORIGINAL: SAINT JOSEPH, Mich. -- Incumbent Bill Huizenga was contested in the congressional primary by GOP challenger Brendan Muir.
Muir, a Project Management Consultant and chair for the Ottawa County Republican Party, made the decision to run against Huizenga on March 30. While the two candidates do have some areas of overlapping polices, Muir believes the current congress is falling short.
His campaign website said the house, “failed to properly negotiate with the Biden Administration, leaving our borders wide open, increasing the debt ceiling by 2.5 trillion dollars just last year, providing 200 billion in funding to Ukraine for a proxy war, and reauthorizing FISA,”.
Huizenga served on many committees in the 118th congress, including the House Financial Services Committee as the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. He also joined the House Foreign Affairs Committee which oversees the use of the United States Armed Forces.
Primary polls closed at 8 p.m. EDT.
The winner of the republican candidate spot will face off with Democratic candidate, Jessica Swartz on Nov. 5 in the general election.
