SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Crews with the City of South Bend say they are actively responding to the aftermath of yesterday’s storm and working diligently to clear streets, public rights-of-way and alleys.

While crews are also focused on restoring traffic signals, it is still likely that drivers find an intersection with a non-functioning traffic signal. In that case, city officials say, you should treat it as a four-way stop until power is restored.

"Homeowners are responsible for clearing storm debris from their private property, city officials said. "Tree debris can be dropped off at the city’s organic resources facility, located at 4340 Trade Drive. Now through Saturday, April 12, the fee for disposal has been waived for city residents."

For the next two weeks, weekday hours at the facility have been extended from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and Organic Resources is also open from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Saturdays.

"Homeowners are allowed one bulky item pickup and one yard waste extra pickup per month, free of charge," city officials said.

"For a yard waste extra pickup, homeowners are allowed ten 30-gallon biodegradable yard waste bags or a cubic yard of bundled and tied limbs per month. Branches need to be cut to four feet or shorter, be no more than four inches in diameter and bundled securely with twine into manageable bundles."

Homeowners can schedule an extra pickup by calling 311 or filling out an online form.
