CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- After a mass exodus of attorneys in Cass County, the county is left with one Interim Prosecutor, Sarah Scoggin.

Wednesday marks her third day getting settled into the new role as she continues to look for people to fill the empty seats in the prosecutor's office.

Former Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz and five other attorneys resigned in May, citing local toxicity and low pay. ABC57 was at the Cass County Law and Courts Building Wednesday to see how the courts are functioning during this transition period.

Court wrapped up in about 30-40 minutes in Judge Mark Herman's courtroom. There were motions filed in two different cases and Judge Herman, the judge who swore Sarah Scoggin in last Thursday, asked if she was ready and both times she said yes.

From the looks of it, she was caught up on the current motion before the court but also on prior charges to be able to make reasonable requests on behalf of the People.

ABC57 caught up with Scoggin briefly after court adjourned and she said she's still getting her feet wet and she's very grateful to her staff who have made this transition a bit easier for her.

While she says she was prepared for the cases on Wednesday, Scoggin did tell share that a number of cases have been adjourned for now. She said she's also in an administrative role, and the local government aspect is still new to her.

There will be a commissioners' meeting this week and she also shared she'll be meeting with the County Administrator this week to discuss the budget for the prosecutor's office, one of the main issues cited by the exiting attorneys.

ABC57 will continue to update you on this transition period in Cass County.
