UPDATE: Johnson Street reopened following fiery crash involving moped and car, EPD investigating

UPDATE TWO: EPD announced Johnson Street has fully reopened between Elkhart Avenue and Baldwin Street.

UPDATE: EPD says the moped and car crash occurred in the northbound lanes of Johnson Street.

Officers arrived on scene shortly after to find both vehicles on fire. The fire was extinguished quickly.

The two moped occupants were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of their injuries. At this time, authorities do not have an update on their condition.

Neither occupant of the car was injured, and the driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers.

The EPD crash reconstructionists are actively investigating the scene.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department confirmed to ABC57 News that officers responded to a call around 11:53 a.m. Friday for a crash involving a moped and a car near the Elkhart Grand Prix.

Neither vehicle is affiliated with the Grand Prix.

Police say both vehicles caught fire.

The two people on the moped were taken to the hospital for sustained injuries.

Authorities currently have Johnson Street blocked off between Elkhart Avenue and Baldwin Street.

The crash reconstruction team is currently on the scene.
