Berrien County awards four Lifesaving Awards, three Certificates of Commendation

BERRIEN COUNTY, Ind. -- Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit presented “Lifesaving Awards” to Lieutenant Kristin Barker, Sergeant Craig Staneart, Deputy Kendra Warman, and Deputy Ryan Norton on Thursday at the Berrien County Board of Commission Meeting.
Heit also presented “Certificates of Commendation” to Deputy Yuji Hairston, Deputy Anthony Lardizabal, and Deputy Casey Noack for their outstanding work.
These were all presented due to a June 24 incident.
The Berrien County Sheriff's Department reported deputies from the midnight shift responded to an inmate who had attempted suicide in a dorm.
Deputies immediately found the inmate had used a razor to cut both his neck and arm. The man was losing a large amount of blood.
They called for jail medical staff right away and began lifesaving measures, applying pressure to the wounds.
Authorities say the inmate was in and out of consciousness, at times fighting staff to deliberately interfere with lifesaving measures.
The inmate was taken to Corewell Emergency Department where it was confirmed he'd cut his internal and external jugular vein and had lost one to two liters of blood.
He was taken into emergency surgery at the hospital where he received several sutures on his neck and arm.
